From
1981 until 1990 Wheatcraft Industries grew from a small home based business
to one that
filled a niche market
nationally. Everyone dreams of owning a home based business and Wheatcraft
was the dream that worked for Joyce Banbury. The journey began in August
of 1981 with a wheatweaving class at the local art center in Russell,
Kansas. A few wheatweaving lessons started her a new homebased business
that doubled its revenues each year until it was sold in 1990.. There
were several reasons a Weatweaving business thrived for Joyce during
this ten year period.
- She could operate it entirely from her home
- Raw materials were inexpensive
and easy to find (Kansas wheat was the major material used for the
craft)
- It
wasn't a difficult craft to learn and it fit her creative talent
and background in design.
- The
Crafts industry was popular and growing and craft shows
were a viable and inexpensive marketplace for selling wheatweaving.
- There was a demand for both supplies and finished
products for the market
- Kansas was a natural supply and demand state for operating this type
of business
